GLEANINGS (from the Daily Office) – Less Hair to Number – Year One, Proper 23, Wednesday, October 14, 2015, Matthew 10:24-33

“But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.”

These days the hairs on my head are easier to number. I am not happy about it. Vanity wants the hair I had at age 18. But life gives me less in number. And with less color. Like parenting, aging is not for the faint of heart.

With age comes worries about health that I did not have five years ago. I have bad genes. By that I do not mean Liberty or Vanderbilt or acid washed bell bottoms. Thankfully they are not a part of my life, at least not ow. And all photographic evidence to the contrary has been scrubbed. One hopes. No, I inherited bad arteries. Small doses of Lipitor are necessary to keep them from clogging up. And now add the smallest dose of a channel blocker. Ugh. What does the future hold? Is it all downhill from here?

Fear not. That is Jesus’ response to my angst. His father loves sparrows. How much more does he love me! “You are of more value than many sparrows.” And he sustains them. Not one falls without his knowledge.

In the end, I do now know what the future holds. But I know who holds it. I’m in good hands.

Age? Bring it!
