GLEANINGS from the Daily Office – Help Is Coming!

GLEANINGS (from the Daily Office) – Help Is Coming! – Year One, Proper 27, Tuesday, November 10, 2015, Matthew 15:21-28

“Lord, help me.”

Jesus is a man on a mission. He is focused as he should be. His mission begins with the lost house of Israel. “It is not fair” to divert him.

But he is willing to be diverted by three small words, “Lord, help me.” Deep breath. Let me take in this need.

If only the church, the Body of Christ, was equally committed to both the mission and the diversion. Too often we deliver one or the other. We are sometime so focused on getting the Word out that we can’t take in the people it is meant to save. We are sometimes so focused on the needs of the individual (or social justice) we forsake the world and leave it languishing for want of a saving Word.

Jesus points to a tension that cannot be abandoned.

–Frodo: “I wish none of this had happened.” Gandalf: “So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”–
